Obituary for Walter Baran

Walter F. Baran, age 85, of Erie, PA., passed away on Saturday, September 30, 2023. He was born on October 23, 1937, a son of the late Walter P. And Caroline Mikoda Baran.
 
Walter grew up in Erie and attended St. Casimir’s School in 1951. He graduated from East High School in 1955, Following his passion for music, he attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1959 with a degree in Music Education. While at IUP Walter was a brother of Tau Kappa Epsilon, and he served in the ROTC program. After graduation, he served in the Army Reserves. Walter was proud to serve his country. Walter’s career as a music teacher began in 1959 at Tidioute School District. In 1960, he taught in the Northwestern School District. Following that, he was a traveling music teacher for the city of Erie elementary schools until 1963 when he became the band director at East High School. In 1970, he became Harbor Creek Jr./Sr. High School's beloved band director where he lead the Marching Huskies to win countless awards in competitions and worked as their general music teacher until his retirement in 1993. Walter was instrumental in starting the Bands in a Round concert as well as a co-creator of the LMBA with other band directors in Erie and surrounding counties.   He was also a member of P.S.E.A., P.A.S.R.
 
In his retirement, Walter continued his passion for art by making intricate woodworkings in his small business, Walt's Way Woodcrafts.

Devoted husband to his wife of 49 years, Georgiann Kazimierowski Baran, he is also survived by his daughters Kristin René, Heather Baran, and Gretchen Baran, his grandchildren; Justin Baran, Christopher, Joshua, and Brittanie Hollenbeck, several great grandchildren, and his sister, Loretta Baran.
 
 Along with his parents, Walter was preceded in death by his grandparents, Paul and Teofila Baran; uncles Edwin (Joyce) Baran, Alfred (Margaret) Baran, Philip (Madeleine) Mikoda, William (Audrey) Mikoda, Carroll (Jane) Mikoda, and several dear cousins.
   
Friends may call on Wednesday, October 4, 2023 at the Kloecker Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. 2502 Sassafras St. from 3pm until 7pm and are invited to the Funeral Mass the following morning, Thursday, October 5, 2023 at St. Casimir’s Church at 10am.
