Obituary for Valjean Zack (LaPlaca)

Valjean Marie (LaPlaca) Zack, age 88, passed away on Thursday, July 22, 2021, at The Fairfax Skilled Nursing Community in Ft. Belvoir, VA.

On October 20, 1932, she was born to the late Anthony and Rose LaPlaca and grew up in Erie, PA. She married her high school sweetheart, George P. Zack, Jr., on May 25, 1956. They were married 34 years at the time of his passing in 1990 and would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this year.

Valjean was a devoted wife and mother to three daughters. She worked for many years as the Bookkeeper for two catholic parishes in Maryland, first for St. Francis of Assisi in Rockville and then for St. Martin’s in Gaithersburg. She was an artist of many talents but especially enjoyed painting, flower arranging, and elaborate crafts. She loved to travel and explore new scenery, birdwatching, browsing antique shops, shopping with her girls, and spending time with her beloved Dachshund, Shali. Valjean was a history buff at heart and loved all things related to Abraham Lincoln, the Civil War, and her favorite vacation destination, Williamsburg, VA.

Valjean was preceded in death by her husband George P. Zack, Jr., her parents Anthony and Rose LaPlaca, her sisters Genevieve Panetta, Joyce Damico, and Charlotte Padron, brother-in-law Carmen Panetta, sisters-in-law Margaret Zack and Evelyn Tkacik, and brother-in-law Frank Zack.

Valjean is survived by her three daughters, Sharon Zack (Joe), Mary Coe (Dave), both of Maryland, and Lisa Furlong (Dennis) of Virginia, her grandchildren Paul (Chrissi) of Oregon, Kyle (Andi) of Virginia, and Kelsey (David) of Georgia, as well as her two great-grandchildren, Sorella and Theo. Valjean is also survived by three generations of nieces and nephews that reside across the United States.
