Obituary for Robert Lutton

Robert Stickle Lutton died peacefully at Saint Mary’s at Asbury Ridge on February 17, 2022, at the age of 90.

Robert or “Bob” to many, is survived by his daughter, Lisa Lutton Weitzman (Steven), sons, Robert Gehrlein Lutton (Janet), Richard Patrick Lutton (Kathy), and James Matthew Lutton (Jen) and son-in-law, Garry Jennings. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren: Kristy Netkowicz, Lisa Netkowicz, Erica Jennings, Jessica Jennings Carrara, Joshua Lutton, Robert Lutton, Ryan Lutton, Justin Dearbeck, Richard Weitzman, Michael Weitzman, Brendon Lutton and Sydney Lutton; 14 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carol Gehrlein Lutton and 2 daughters, Lynda Lutton Netkowicz and Patti Lutton Jennings and son-in-law Robert Netkowicz.

Bob was born on August 14th, 1931, in Bridgeville, PA to Robert Chapman Lutton and Sara Stickle Lutton. He married Carol, his high school sweetheart, and they shared 61 years together.

Bob enjoyed life to the fullest and was beloved by his children and grandchildren. In his younger years, he was an accomplished bowler, tennis, and racquetball player and an avid hunter and fisherman. At 31, he bowled a perfect 300! He truly enjoyed spending time with his large family and taught them to play dominoes, pinochle, poker, and other games he deemed necessary for a fun and well-rounded life. He loved to sing songs around his home and enjoyed intimidating his daughters’ boyfriends.

A City of Erie Firefighter until 1993, Bob loved the camaraderie of his firehouse days and would regale his family with stories of fighting fires and playing games with his pals. He especially enjoyed beating his fellow firemen at ping pong, where he reigned supreme. His buddies never held grudges though, perhaps because he would often bake them his famous lasagna. Bob particularly loved to talk about fire safety at elementary schools while wearing his full firefighter uniform, which delighted the students and made his children so proud.
Prior to fighting fires, Bob was the owner of Lutton’s Grocery Store, at 23rd and Sassafras.
He was a long-time member and usher at Sacred Heart Church. While at Saint Mary’s, Bob often carried the cross during the procession for mass.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at St. Mary’s for their good and compassionate care.
