Obituary for Richard Tome
Richard “Dick” Tome, 92, of Erie, PA passed away on Saturday, February 27, 2021.
He was born in Erie on January 7, 1929, son of the late, Leon and Anna (Scheffner) Tome.
Dick graduated from Academy High School and married his high school sweetheart, Dolores, in 1950. Dick worked at Erie Window Glass, PPG, and Hedlund Glass. He retired from the L. U. #486 in 1986, after serving as the Finance Secretary and the President for over fifteen years. Dick was the commissioner of Boys Baseball and coached Football at Blessed Sacrament School for over 30 years. He was also the youngest person in PA to be issued a pilots license. Dick served his country overseas for 16 months during the Korean War as a N.C.O. in the Division Headquarters, ARTY. He was a lifetime member of the Sunflower Club, Blessed Sacrament Ushers, VFW 470, the Building Committee at Blessed Sacrament, and past Chairman of the State Apprentice Committee. Dick enjoyed sports, flying, traveling in South and South Western states, and visiting many civil war battlefields.
The Tome family came from Germany in the early 1700s and moved to Western PA in the early 1800s. Dick’s great-great-grandfather was the spokesperson for the Seneca Indian Nation. Members of the Tome family served in the Civil War and the Revolutionary War and are buried in the Revolutionary War Cemetery in Dallastown, PA.
In addition to his parents, Dick is preceded in death by his sisters, Louise Grumblatt and Agnes DeHart, and brother-in-law, Joe Grumblatt.
He is survived by his wife, Dolores (Sitter) Tome, sons, Rick (Jeanine), Dave (Judy), and Kevin (Gretchen) Tome, grandchildren, Brian Tome, Michelle (Mike) Kappler, Adam (Nikki) Tome, Carolyn Tome, and Steve Tome, and three great-grandchild, Addison, Aiden, and Aubrey Kappler. Dick is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call on Friday at Blessed Sacrament Church from 9am until the time of the Funeral Mass at 10am. Private Burial with Military Honors will be held at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. The Kloecker Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. is handling the arrangements.
