Obituary for Norbert Malthaner

Norbert Francis Malthaner (Norb), 92, of Erie, passed away on Saturday, December 3, 2022, at Nightingale Nursing Home.

Norb was born on November 26, 1930 in Erie, PA, the son of the late Norbert Malthaner and Cecilia (Tellers) Malthaner Dudenhoeffer.

Norb was a graduate of Academy High School. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and served on the USS Cogswell destroyer during the Korean War. Following his military service, he returned to Erie and began his career as a pipe organ builder. During his career he made the chests for some of the nation’s prestigious pipe organs, including those in Chautauqua and Oral Roberts. He retired from Tellers Organ Company and Organ Supply Industries.

Norb married Katherine “Kay” Fearn in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Erie, on January 7, 1956. He was active in various ministries at Sacred Heart Church and worked in the Serves program as senior volunteer in the Kindergarten classroom at Perry School. Upon retiring, Norb and Kay volunteered delivering food for Meals on Wheels. He was also a life member of the Siebenbuerger Club. He enjoyed reading, painting, wood crafts, fishing, and was a sports fan, especially of baseball.

Norb is survived by his wife, Kay, as well as their three children, Maureen (Steve) Thompson, Michael (Jean) Malthaner, and Fr. John Malthaner; four grandchildren, John (April) Thompson and their children Rae Lynn, Breonna, and Andrew (AJ); Gregory (Samantha) Thompson and their children Madison, Trenton, Zoey, and Adelyn; Ryan (Elizabeth) Thompson and their children Olivia and Paige; and Erin (Zak) Stewart and their children Everett and Neil. Also surviving is his brother-in-law, Jim Lynch, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Ann Cooney and Ruth Mary Lynch, and niece/goddaughter Mary (Lynch) McHugh.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Sacred Heart Church or charity of choice.

Friends may call on Tuesday at the Kloecker Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc from 3 pm until 7 pm and are invited to a service there on Wednesday at 9:15 am followed by the Funeral Mass at Sacred Heart Church at 10 am. Send condolences to www.kloeckerfuneralhome.com
