Obituary for Nance Hoffman

Nance Annunziata Pede Hoffman, age 85, of Erie, PA passed away on Tuesday, December 8, 2020.

She was born March 18, 1935 in Lorain, Ohio, the second child of
Amedeo (Ted) and Adelgisa (Angelina) Palloto Pede. She was a graduate of Harborcreek High School and Thiel College where she was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority.

While in high school, she wrote a weekly column of school activities for the Sunday Erie Times-News.

Nance was employed as an Executive Secretary for the Plant Manager at the former Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corp., went on to work in the Personnel Department at the former American Sterilizer Company (AMSCO) where she was instrumental in organizing the Amsco Gal Friday Association and then later retired from St. Vincent Hospital Community Mental Health Center as their Business Manager in 1974.

She enjoyed making crafts and was an accomplished decorative painter, teaching the craft in her home to many friends over the years. Along with her husband, she was an avid Gannon University basketball fan, commencing in 1967 and continued to support the University by keeping her two season tickets for 40 years.

Resided in Stow, Ohio from 1982 to 1998 where she was a member of the Stow Women’s Club and served as their Treasurer before moving back to Erie. She was a member of St. Paul Roman Catholic Church, a member of its choir, a member of the Rosary Altar Society and volunteered for many of the church’s functions. She also was a member of the Italian/American Women’s Club for many years.

Besides her parents, Nance was preceded in death by her husband, Donald W. “Dutch” Hoffman in March 2000, a brother, Brigadier General August R. Pede in 1998, his wife, Jeanette Lou Pede in 2013, and a great-niece, Megan, in 1991.

She is survived by her niece Katherine A. Pede, McLean, VA, and nephews, Steven B. Pede (Jan) Tucson, AZ, James T. Pede, (Audrey), San Antonio TX, and Lieutenant General Charles N. Pede (Anne) Arlington, VA, two great-nephews, Anthony and Nathan (Hannah) Pede Richmond, VA, a cousin, Carmelina Pede, Montenero, Italy and many “adopted” nieces and nephews all of whom brought much joy to her life.

Burial with her husband in Arlington National Cemetery at the convenience of the family and military. Donations, if desired, may be made to St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church, 1617 Walnut Street, Erie, Pa., or the local Humane Society and animal shelters.
