Obituary for Martin Carroll

Martin J. Carroll, age 78, of Erie, passed away on Sunday, April 4, 2021.

He was born in Erie on June 26, 1942, a son of the late Thomas and Alice Walsh Carroll.

Marty graduated from Cathedral Preparatory School in 1960 then joined the US Navy where he served on the USS Helena and the USS Fechteler in the Western Pacific from 1960-1964. He worked briefly at American Sterilizer before joining the Pennsylvania State Police in 1966, where he was active in youth services and helped run Camp Cadet for many years. He retired from the State Police in 1981 and started work at St. Vincent Hospital as the Director of Security for 15 years. After leaving St. Vincent, he was a safety consultant at Insurance Management Company where he worked until his retirement. He dedicated his time to Erie Youth Hockey as coach, general manager, board member, and President for 10 years. He was a football referee who helped run official’s organizations in many capacities from Little Gridders to the collegiate level. He was active in the Erie Irish Cultural Society and Rince na Tiarna Irish dancing, and was a proud member and lifelong participant in Erie Times Old Newsies. He, along with his wife Denise, was one of the founders of the Down Syndrome Support Group of Erie and opened their home to numerous foster children and a foreign exchange student. A proud graduate of Erie Clown College and fluent speaker of Blarney, Marty the Party served as the 1st and only Mayor of Molly Brannigans. His hobbies included woodworking, captaining The Seven C's, long rides around town with his daughter Erin, and—up until the day he passed—cooking for a small army. He displayed a strong love of family, pride and pleasure in his Irish heritage, faithfulness in enduring friendships, and a firm devotion to the memory of his beloved Denise.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Denise R. Winkelbauer Carroll in 2000 and a brother, Thomas Carroll.

Survivors include his 7 proudest accomplishments, Dr. Sean Carroll and his wife Bernadette, Michelle Carroll, Colleen Shaw and her husband Bob, Timothy Carroll and his wife Keri, and Erin Carroll, all of Erie, Megan Archer and her wife VeAna of Gulf Breeze, Florida and Dr. Rory Carroll and his wife Abby of Magnolia, Arkansas, a sister, Shaleen Liebel and her husband Mike, 15 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call on Thursday at the Kloecker Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc from 3 pm to 7 pm and are invited to the Funeral Mass at St. George Church on Friday at 11 am. Send condolences to www.kloeckerfuneralhome.com
