Obituary for Sister Pierre Dembinski RSM

Sister Pierre Dembinski, RSM, 100 years of age, died on January 29, 2022, at the Sisters of Mercy Motherhouse. She was born on October 21, 1921, in Erie, PA, the daughter of the late Teles and Rose (Scheloski) Dembinski.  From St. Casimir Parish in Erie, she entered the Sisters of Mercy in Titusville, PA, on September 1, 1949. 

She received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Mercyhurst College (Univ.) and pursued further university studies at Cornell, Eastern Michigan, Mercy College in Detroit, St. Mary’s in San Antonio. Sr. Pierre also received certifications in library science from Edinboro State Univ.; pastoral counseling from Presbyterian Seminary in Pittsburgh; and cosmetology from the Pittsburgh School of Cosmetology.

Sr. Pierre taught elementary schools in the Erie and Pittsburgh Catholic Dioceses for 15 years. Her interests and gifts led her to supervise the foods operations at Mercyhurst College for 6 years, then on to minister in the Pittsburgh Diocese at St Alphonsus, Springdale, St. John, Pittsburgh, and Mt. St. Peter Church in New Kensington, where she served in the roles of parish social minister, program director, and pastoral minister for 20 years.

Prior to her retirement, Sr. Pierre was a receptionist at Saint Mary’s Home, Erie. She coordinated the Prayer Shawl Ministry at the Motherhouse and sang in the choir until the last weeks of her life.

Her religious community and sister, Ruth Kinzig, of Blasdell, NY, as well as many nieces and nephews, survive her. In addition to her parents, three brothers, Robert, Francis, and John Dembinski, and two sisters, Eleanor Dembinski and Rosemary Jaskiewicz, have preceded her in death. `

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 2, 2022, at St. Luke Church, 421 E. 38th Street, Erie PA 16504, from 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. Liturgy will follow at 11:00 with Msgr. David Rubino presiding. Burial will follow immediately at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. We ask that those in attendance please wear a mask and observe all social distancing protocols.
