Obituary for Kathleen Kuhn (Caryl)

Our family matriarch, Kathleen ( “Kay”) Kuhn passed away peacefully on March 30, 2023 following a brief illness. Mom/Grandma/Aunt Kay/Kay was beloved by all. Not a cross word was ever spoken by her. She lived her life with grace, dignity, compassion…and fun!

Kay was born on February 25, 1936, child of Delmont and Kathleen (Collins) Caryl. Her younger siblings are Delmont (Brub) Caryl, Bonnie van Oosterhout and Jane Isidoro. She graduated from St. Andrews grade school (1950), Villa Maria High School (1954) and Villa Maria College (1958). In 1960, she married Richard Kuhn, MD, while he was a student at University of Pittsburgh Medical School. Kay taught grade school in Penn Hills and Harding Elementary in Erie upon their return. The young couple bought their home in Glenwood Hills where the family lived a traditional happy life anchored by Mom until dad’s passing in 2017.

Kay and Dick have 3 children: David ( Martha), Julie (Lee Rexrode) Chacona, and Jennifer (John) Knox. Grandma especially adored each of her grandchildren: Charlie (Emma), Gritz (Katie), Jack, Amy, Katie, Sam, Clay and Maria.

Kay had a strong Catholic faith and was a member of St. Luke Catholic Church. She was involved in Erie County Medical Society Auxiliary, Sarah Reed Children Center, Rainbows, Mother to Mother organization, Seedlings Garden Club and other philanthropies throughout her life. She was the owner of Merry-Go-Round Again baby consignment store and a tutor for ESL adults. Kay and Dick were long time patrons of the Erie Philharmonic. She loved tending to her garden, reading, playing tennis and bridge, and stayed true to her Irish heritage!

Kay’s life-long circle of friends was expansive, loyal and cherished by her. The world was a better place while Kay was still around, but her memories and love will continue forward by everyone who was fortunate to know her. God bless you Mom, Grandma, Aunt Kay, Kay. You lived a wonderful life and set a high bar for each of us to aspire.
