Katherine J. Fearn Malthaner (Kay)
Kay was born on January 8, 1930, in Erie, PA, the daughter of the late Walter and Alice (Murphy) Fearn.
Kay took great pride in her Irish heritage and will be remembered by many for both her smiling Irish eyes and the head-to-toe green attire worn each St. Patrick’s Day. Upon graduating from Academy High School, Kay entered the workforce utilizing her secretarial skills. After working as a secretary for private contractors, she retired as a secretary from Erie Diocesan Schools, including Blessed Sacrament, St. George, and Villa Maria Academy. After retirement, she still received many cards and calls from former colleagues and students.
Kay married Norb Malthaner in St. Joseph Church, Erie, on January 7, 1956. Norb passed away on December 3, 2022, just one month shy of their 67th anniversary. Kay was a member of the Sacred Heart Altar Society (past president) and St. Mark Seminary Auxiliary. She was active as a lector, greeter, and funeral coordinator at Sacred Heart Church, and worked in the SERVES program as a senior volunteer at Perry School. Upon retiring, Kay and Norb volunteered delivering food for Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed music, plays and musicals (especially live theatre) and was a long-time season ticket holder of the Erie Playhouse. She enjoyed playing pinochle and Rummikub and was a member of two card clubs.
Kay is survived by her three children, Maureen (Steve) Thompson, Michael (Jean) Malthaner, and Fr. John Malthaner; four grandchildren, John (April) Thompson and their children Rae Lynn, Breonna, and Andrew (AJ); Gregory (Samantha) Thompson and their children Madison, Trenton, Zoey, and Adelyn; Ryan (Elizabeth) Thompson and their children Olivia and Paige; and Erin (Zak) Stewart and their children Everett and Neil. Several nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother Arthur W. Fearn III and his wife, Emma; her brother, Walter Fearn and his wife Dorothy; her nephew, Arthur W. Fearn IV; and goddaughter, Mary (Lynch) McHugh.
