Obituary for John "Jack" Greene

John (Jack) W. Greene Sr., age 97, of Erie, passed away peacefully, on Friday, April 28, 2023 at Elmwood Gardens.

Jack was born in Erie, on November 5, 1925, son of the late Harry and Amelia (Fehrer) Greene. He graduated from Academy High School in 1943 and was drafted into the Navy in January of 1944. He trained as a medic at the Naval Hospital in Great Lakes, Illinois. His medical unit was attached to Marine Fighting Unit 223, Marine Attack Squadron 223 and Marine Aircraft Group 14 in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of WWII. He was proud to have worn the uniform of both the Navy and Marine Corps. He attained the rank of Pharmacist's Mate 2nd Class before being honorably discharged from service in May 1946. Jack was employed by the A&P Grocery Store after the war until 1954 when he joined the Erie Fire Department. He retired from Engine 8 in 1979 having attained the rank of Captain, two sons followed him into the fire service, a retired Captain and an active Lieutenant. He then worked in maintenance at St. Vincent's Hospital until 1990. 
He met his "sweetheart always", Joyce Nelson, and they were married on September 3, 1956. Jack and Joyce enjoyed raising their four children, participating in all their activities including many travels with family and friends. He also enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, camping, square dancing and especially spending time with his grandchildren. He was also known to have a sweet tooth and would never refuse a piece of candy or vanilla ice cream. He loved reciting the many songs and poems he learned from his father when he was a child. Jack served many years as an Usher and assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 90 at Blessed Sacrament Parish. 
Jack was a wonderful husband, a great father, a fun grandfather and loyal friend. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife Joyce in 2017, brothers Harry, Leroy and Thomas and sisters Irma, Elizabeth, Mary Margaret and Patricia. In addition, he was preceded in death by his dear friends Kenny and Kay Hardner, Jack and Romona Tirpak and Don and Dorothy Jerioski. 

He is survived by his children, John Jr. (Pat James) of Scarborough, Maine; Richard and Kevin, both of Erie and Elaine (Andrew) of Nokesville, Virginia; grandchildren, Melissa, Andrew (Patty) and Amy, sisters-in-law Margaret and Lenora Greene, many beloved nieces, nephews and many friends.
Friends may call on Thursday, May 4th at the Kloecker Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2502 Sassafras St., Erie, PA 16502, from 3pm until 7pm. and are invited to the Funeral Service the following morning, Friday, May 5, at the Funeral Home at 9:45am followed by the Funeral Mass at Blessed Sacrament Church located at 1626 West 26th St. in Erie at 10:30am. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.
