Obituary for Jacquelyn Kuhn (Nunes)

Jacquelyn M. Nunes Kuhn, age 91, of Erie, passed away on Sunday, April 30, 2023.

She was born in Erie on June 15, 1931, a daughter of the late Vincent and Catherine Mithers Nunes.

Jackie is best known as one of Erie’s premier hairstylists, however, Jackie’s artistic journey began at the Erie Conservatory of Music where she studied piano and accordion, followed by a Saturday at the movie theater. She performed throughout high school and played accordion on the family owned sunset cruise ship.

Totally bored with the secretarial job at G.E., she decided she wanted to make women look like movie stars. She studied extensively in Erie and throughout the country in hair, wig and make up design.

Jackie opened her first shop on Erie’s East side in 1964, Erie’s West side in 1965 and in January 1967 enjoyed the grand opening of Erie’s largest beauty and wig salon, with 15 experienced operators, Swedish saunas and baths, electrolysis, make up and jewelry services. “Beauty by Jacquelyn” was featured in American Hairdresser Magazine, the country’s premier hairstyling magazine of 1967. Within the next 15 years she traveled extensively working with the Miss America Pageant, Modern Beauty Magazine, Breck Product, Helene Curtis, Merle Norman, as well as, international beauty shows in New York City, California, Detroit, Toronto and Miami. She taught hair and design locally, donated in judging pageants across the country, and at the peak of her career, owned 5 Erie styling locations. Throughout the 60s and 70s she participated in numerous style shows, pageants and benefits for local charities. She taught at Ora Jean, OIC, Erie Beauty Academy and J.H. Thompson.

She later co-owned Country Tavern with her husband, Ed and enjoyed her retired life antiquing, travelling, camping, quilting, bowling, playing cards, and learning to golf.

Always enjoying life, her last years were spent at Niagara Village and finally at Manchester Commons, where she made many friends, and continued to draw, and do her hair and make up each day. The family would like to sincerely thank all of the wonderful caregivers.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Edward Kuhn, and her cousin, of whom she considered her brother, Carl Salvo.

She is survived by a daughter, Sharon Buettner (Randy Buettner), two sons, Scott Kuhn (Kathleen Kuhn) and Todd Kuhn. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Andrea, Zachary, Alexene, Amelia, Owen, Wesley, Ashley, Autumn and seven greatgrandchildren with two more on the way.

Friends may call on Sunday at the Kloecker Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc from 2 pm to 6 pm and are invited to the Funeral Mass on Monday at St Patrick Church at 10 am. Send condolences to www.kloeckerfuneralhome.com Donations may be made in her honor to St. Patrick Church in Erie, PA.
